Constructed in 1873 by prominent Batesburg farmer, KcKendree Mitchell, this Greek Revival home is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and now it can be yours!  An elaborate cast iron fence and gate, anchored by brick pillars, welcomes visitors to this spectacular home of the antebellum period.  The home features a central projecting porch, four evenly spaced wood pillars with panels which support the gabled portico, which itself features returns and a central tripartite window.  A turned balustrade connects the porch pillars with matching pilasters.  Corbeled chimneys straddle the composition roof ridge.  The home has five fireplaces.   Four six-over-six windows flank the central double door, which is framed by square paned sidelights and transom.  The doors boast handsome lion’s head brass door knockers.  The brass plaque containing the National Register of Historic Places designation is displayed at the front entrance. 

The two lights mounted beside the front door were gas lamps on a horse-drawn hearse from the 1800’s.  They are adorned with cherubs and angels, and are typical of the era.  The home has heart pine floors and high ceilings.  The grand foyer boasts classically designed blue and gold wallpaper over wainscoting.  The magnificent chandelier overhead is true to the antebellum period.  The grand staircase ascends to a second floor where possibilities for expansion await.  Currently, there are two bedrooms and a center multi-purpose space.  To the right of the foyer is the parlor.  There is no closet, but this room could be converted into a bedroom.  It has a fireplace and the walls are covered in beautiful, Asian-inspired wallpaper. 

To the left of the foyer is the famous “Heritage Club” room, where all serious conversations took place.  It was the library/drawing room/Gentlemen’s (and Ladies’) room.  It was the place to consume copious amounts of Cuban cigars and libations while those gathered solved the world’s problems on the back of a cocktail napkin.  The current owner states that this room was used for this purpose prior to buying the house, and that he continued the tradition.  Anytime a serious discussion came up, a dash was made to the “Heritage Club” room.  One of the five fireplaces in the home is in this room and it has a marble hearth.  From the “Heritage Room,” one can move freely into the stately formal dining room, with fireplace, and into the large kitchen.  The kitchen boasts new vinyl flooring, double oven, pantry and fireplace.  There are two large bedrooms and baths on the main level.  One bath has an antique claw foot tub.  The original back porch was enclosed and is used as a comfortable reading room which boasts built-ins and displays wild game mounts.  In the 1960’s, a new structure was added to the existing home, and it contains a wine cellar and tiled media room.

The yard features a patio, brick walkways and classic boxwood hedges.
